Sex Life of Couples in Indian Slums

Below is an interview I had personally with a women in an Indian slum. She did not want her name to be mentioned and therefore I would refer to her as Mrs X through this blog.

Some times back I was able to visit an Indian slum in one of the most crowded cities in India i.e Mumbai. When I was randomly strolling down the small alleyways, I saw a little child around the age of 12, I was carrying a packet of biscuits and handed out to the little fellow. Immediately went forth and introduced his mother to me.

I sat down in the front part of their house which had a concrete step and slowly started a discussion with her. She immediately started stating her difficulties and how hard life was. Along the way I started questioning about her family and got to know she was a mother of 7 children.

A further dig in and I got to know that her eldest was as old as 35 and the youngest was just around 8 and furthermore the age gap between herself and her eldest daughter was just 15 years which means she became a mother at 15.

I asked with all the difficulties around, why she did not plan her family and restricted the number of children. With a shyly grin in her face she said that "how can we control" and also her husband is a manual laborer working in warehouse carrying goods all day and when he comes home at night he routinely drinks alcohol and have sex.

I then went on to ask her that why she did not use a condom to which she replied that the house was too small and she slept together with their children in the same room and that making use of a condom for some reason she believe is too much of a task and that while doing so might alert her children.
