You Definitely Missed this in the Avengers (2012)

Avengers (2012) movie had a perfect little secret!

Advert

Most people didn’t notice this. Even I didn’t, until I read about it somewhere.

In Avengers (2012), Tony Stark (Iron Man) is on the control deck of S.H.I.E.L.D's flying base. He sees an operator playing when he should be working and announces "That man is playing Galaga!"

The operator changes his workstation to actual work, and when Tony isn’t looking, he sneakily changes back to Galaga and starts playing again.

What was the significance of this moment? What is the deal with this game “Galaga”? In the sea of arcade games, why Galaga? Why not reference some other old arcade game? Why was it so important that Tony Stark himself called out the name of the game instead of saying something like “That man is playing!” or “That man is playing games!”?

Anyone who has played Galaga would know that Galaga is basically a game where you defend Earth from a shower of alien ships that barge in from above.

This is very much like the final fight where the Avengers defended Earth by fighting a shower of alien ships that rained down from the sky.

The Galaga bit in that scene didn’t really “spoil” the movie plot for most people because they didn’t think it had any significant meaning.

It was clever foreshadowing, though. Very clever.
